Our Concert Series

Our Concert series is run at the University in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall. Typically featuring talented student soloists and ensembles our concert programme is sure to have something for you to enjoy. Entry to concerts is free to members of the society. Concerts will usually start at 1pm.

Glorious George

Friday 28th February, 1pm

A celebration of George Gershwin, one of the best-loved composers of the 20th century. Gershwin wrote for stage, screen and concert hall, and his music – often with his brother Ira’s lyrics – is now part of the standard repertoire for orchestras, singers and jazz instrumentalists.

 

A selection of this enduring vocal and instrumental music will be performed by: Little VoxThree Girls, One TomBrassneck Saxophone Quartet

Ahead of their evening concert, featuring music by Lachenmann, Xenakis and Takemitsu, the Chimera ensemble's lunchtime concert presents a varied programme of student works.

Vocal Quintet and Chopin

Tuesday 3rd March, 1pm

Vocal Quintet: A program of music throughout the ages featuring stunning, sacred and secular vocal works that display the best of the English and European choral tradition.

 

Chopin Recital: Chopin was one of the greatest composers of piano music in the 19th century and, arguably, of all time. And to honour this, Tim Norman, a first year mathematics student, will provide a concert with an interesting collection of some of Chopin’s most acclaimed works. 

University of York Big Band

Tuesday 11th March, 1pm

The University of York Big Band will be performing a wide variety of big band tunes, from 1920’s swing to funk, from Glenn Miller to Herbie Hancock. The band will perform standards such as ‘Chameleon’, ‘In the Mood’, ‘Jump, Jive An’ Wail’, and ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’.
